Jewish Museum in Prague Reopens ARTSCHUL Gallery with Lost and Found

The Jewish Museum in Prague reopens its newly reconstructed ARTSCHUL Gallery, a new space combining exhibitions and education, with the inaugural exhibition Lost and Found.

The reconstruction transforms the former gallery into a modern space combining the functions of an exhibition gallery and an educational centre. The new name reflects this broader role as well as the history of the location.

ARTSCHUL refers to the Altschul (Old School), the oldest synagogue of the former Jewish Town in Prague. The synagogue stood on the site of today’s complex of Jewish Museum buildings from the early 13th century until 1686. Its historical presence is also preserved in the name of the adjacent street, U Staré školy (Altschulgasse in German).

The reopening of ARTSCHUL will be marked by the temporary exhibition Lost and Found, focusing on Jewish ritual objects and books that, despite their cultural, historical and artistic significance, have often remained outside the attention given to famous works of art.

The exhibition presents stories of several Jewish heritage objects that were once lost and have been rediscovered in recent years. Their stories highlight both the fragility of cultural heritage and the importance of its preservation and rediscovery.

The reopening of ARTSCHUL marks a new chapter for the space, bringing together the presentation of Jewish heritage, contemporary exhibition-making and educational activities.
