Following the successful programme held in Vienna in 2010, this year’s Curatorial Education Programme (CEP) took place in the Jewish Museum Berlin from April 11 to 15. The professional training and development of museum staff and the exchange of knowledge between members plays a key role within the AEJM’s mission to assist its members in meeting the challenges of today. The CEP aims at the theoretical and practical training of curatorial staff in fields specific to the work of Jewish museums and offers its participants an opportunity for networking as well.
The 2011 programme was organised by Programme Director of the Jewish Museum Berlin Cilly Kugelmann. An extended five days programme gave insight in vital aspects of curatorial, archival and educational work. Curatorial staff members from sixteen museums from thirteen different countries participated in the workshops and lectures on Judaica by the Berlin museum staff and international guests.
“The programme offered a wonderful springboard from which to reflect on our own practice. It was a great learning experience to debate the many issues that arose from the sessions – museological, political, ethical – with museum professionals who all work in the area of Jewish heritage, but in such widely differing contexts” says Joanne Rosenthal of the Jewish Museum London, who participated in the programme.
