Re-Opening of the Jewish Museum of Switzerland
The Jewish Museum of Switzerland would like to invite you to celebrate its re-opening on 30 November 2025. The new location in the heart of Basel was once the medieval Jewish cemetery. An open-air installation of monumental gravestones shows the history of the site.
The frontispiece of the new museum is an adaptation of the artwork «Jeziory» by the US artist Frank Stella. «Jeziory» is the name of a small town in present-day Belarus which housed a magnificent wooden synagogue that was destroyed during World War I.
In the early 1970s, Frank Stella produced a series of works on the synagogues of Eastern Europe, called «Polish Village.» The special exhibition «Frank Stella and the Destroyed Wooden Synagogues» (2025–2026), juxtaposes Stellas abstract sculptures with synagogue models.
The new permanent exhibition «Kult, Kultur, Kunst. Jüdische Erfahrungen» («Cult, Culture, Art. Jewish Experiences») presents the Swiss-Jewish culture in many facets: As a religion, as history and as a space for debate.
