Job offer: Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Jewish Museum Berlin

The Jewish Museum Berlin is looking to fill a full-time position (39 hours per week) in salary group 15 of the TVöD Bund (collective agreement for federal public service). The position is initially limited to two years (fixed-term probationary period) with the option of permanent employment thereafter. The starting date is 1 January 2027. The pay grade will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications.

The Director of Collections and Exhibitions reports directly to the Museum Director and is responsible for the organizational areas of exhibitions, archives, library, collection departments, and collections management. The position of Director of Collections and Exhibitions is a senior leadership role with extensive budgetary and personnel management responsibilities. The position involves a high degree of autonomy, and we therefore seek an experienced leader with strong team-oriented skills, strategic vision, and a decisive approach to management.

The Director of Collections and Exhibitions reports to and operates under the overall authority of the Museum Director, serves as a member of the senior leadership team and plays a key role in shaping the strategic direction of the Jewish Museum Berlin Foundation. As a museum of national significance, funded by the Federal Government, the Jewish Museum Berlin is entrusted with developing and maintaining a comprehensive, high-quality collection relating to Jewish culture in Germany, with an impact that extends well beyond the borders of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic leadership, organizational development and coordination for the Collections and Exhibitions Division and its constituent departments, with overall professional responsibility for their activities
  • Leading the strategic planning and delivery of an engaging, contemporary and audience-focused exhibition program in close collaboration with the Museum Director
  • Overseeing the strategic development of the Jewish Museum Berlin’s collections activities, including collections, archives and library holdings, as well as provenance research and the digitization of the collections
  • Leading the strategic and intellectual development of collections management, including storage and facilities management, conservation, registrar services, photographic documentation, and emergency preparedness and risk management in accordance with the Framework for Cultural Heritage Security (SiLK)
  • Driving and supporting the achievement of strategic institutional objectives within the department, including strengthening the Jewish Museum Berlin’s role in German society, advancing inclusion, sustainability and organisational digital transformation
  • Establishing and maintaining national and international partnerships and fostering collaboration with museums, academic organizations and cultural institutions
    Holding overall responsibility for budgets, staffing and externally funded projects across the departments within the remit of the post
  • Working closely with the Museum Director, the Director of Education and Digital Engagement, and the Managing Director to develop and advance the strategic objectives of the Jewish Museum Berlim

What we are looking for

  • A Master’s degree in humanities or a related field (or equivalent)
    Knowledge of the history and culture of Jewish people in Germany, German-Jewish history, and Judaism
  • Extensive leadership and demonstrated management experience, including responsibility for some of the areas covered by the post, together with strong leadership, interpersonal and people-management skills, ideally gained within a cultural or academic institution
  • Several years of professional experience in collection-related work, including digitization, management of sensitive holdings and substantial experience in the planning, development and delivery of exhibitions
  • Excellent written and spoken German and English
  • An established national and international professional network in relevant fields
    Demonstrated ability to think and plan strategically at an organizational level, combined with outstanding communication skills and a confident professional presence; a collaborative, inclusive and motivating leadership style with a strong commitment to teamwork
  • Desirable: experience in organizational change management, fundraising and securing external funding, expertise in diversity and inclusion, a comprehensive understanding of accessibility, and knowledge of the Hebrew language
