Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations, University of Southampton
From 11-13 July 2016 the Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations, University of Southampton will organise its first International Workshop on Jewish Heritage.
The aim of this conference is to bring academics, heritage practitioners, students and anybody interested in Jewish heritage together to exchange experiences, develop skills, expand their professional networks and establish working partnerships.
The topic of this first edition is ‘Heritage and Its Communities’. The communities in question range from the source communities with whom heritage originates, to those who preserve, interpret and construct it and those who engage with it. Issues relating to communities include: questions of ownership, authority and responsibility for cultural heritage; the role of the state and social groups in its protection and promotion; the difficult task of building trust in fractured societies; the issue of representing loss and absence; and the challenge to meaningfully include source communities in curatorial decisions.
Instead of a traditional conference, this event is going to be participatory and will therefore offer a mixture of workshops, discussions, and keynotes. Furthermore, all attendees have the opportunity to present their heritage or research projects, or their organisations either in a 10-minute short presentation or as part of a poster session.
The organisers also offer a limited number of travel bursaries.
