Full Membership Requirements

Full Members of the Association may be:

  • only legal entities established in Europe
  • who operate a museum or a museum service
  • which focusses on Jewish culture and/or Jewish history
  • with at least one professional whose primary task includes the acquisition, maintenance and exhibition to the public of objects owned or used by the museum or museum service.

Full Members must fulfil the ICOM definition of a museum.

Depending on the Full Time Equivalent (FTE) of staff, Full Members are classified as small (1-5 FTE), medium (6-20 FTE), and large (>20 FTE).

Full Members are:

  • entitled to attend AEJM activities
  • granted access to members-only sections of the website
  • entitled to vote at the Annual General Meeting of the AEJM
  • entitled to nominate staff members as Board Member

Institutional Associate Membership Requirements

Associate Members of the Association may be:

  • legal entities, including registered museums
  • who can make a substantive contribution to the activities of the museums and museum services focused on Jewish culture and/or history.

Museums/institutions wishing to join AEJM and to support the aims of AEJM as Institutional Associate Member can only apply for membership if they are:

  • a European museum with a collection or a department devoted to Judaica and Jewish history and with at least 1 full time staff member working with this collection or at this department or
  • a Jewish museum not based in Europe but with a particular and explicit relation to European Jewish culture and history and to Jewish museums in Europe or
  • a Jewish museum or museum service in Europe still in the course of establishment

Institutional Associate Members are:

  • entitled to attend AEJM activities
  • granted access to members-only sections of the website
  • entitled to attend the Annual General Meeting and are authorized to address the AGM but are not e to vote

Individual Associate Membership

Associate Members of the Association may be:

  • natural persons who can make a substantive contribution to the activities of the museums and museum services focused on Jewish culture and/or history

Individuals wishing to join AEJM and to support the aims of AEJM as Individual Associate Member can apply for membership if they are:

  • able to contribute to the activities of the AEJM with their expertise in the field of Judaica, Jewish history and culture, or museology or
  • working with an organization whose activities are strongly related to and supportive of the aims of AEJM

Individual Associate Members are:

  • entitled to attend AEJM activities
  • granted access to members-only sections of the website
  • entitled to attend the Annual General Meeting and are authorized to address the AGM but are not entitled to vote

Honorary Members

Candidates for Honorary Membership can only be proposed by the Board and should be approved by the Annual General Meeting to acknowledge significant merits with respect to the AEJM. Honorary Members have access to the AGM and are authorized to address the AGM but are not entitled to vote.

Application Procedure

Stage 1
It is recommended to get in touch with AEJM prior to submitting your official application. Make sure to read the membership requirements thoroughly/carefully beforehand? Contact aejm@aejm.org to discuss your options (for an appropriate category) and introduce your museum/institution.

Stage 2
Complete the registration form and send this form including other required documents (such as required reference letters) to the AEJM.

Stage 3
After an assessment of the eligibility of your application, you will receive an update on the status of your application. After a positive assessment by the AEJM board, applying institutions will also receive an invitation to present themselves at the Annual Conference. Please note that participation in the Conference is required for both individuals and institutions applying for membership.

Stage 4
Membership applications will be considered at the Annual General Meeting of the Association of European Jewish Museums. Applicants will be notified of the assembly decision following the meeting.

A registration fee to cover the initial cost of funding the AEJM is due on entering the AEJM. The registration fee is 250 EUR for Full Members and 100 EUR for Associate Members.
