As part of the ongoing development of its organisational structure, the Jewish Museum Berlin has created the position of Director of Collections. This is a management position with budget and personnel responsibility. The Director of Collections reports directly to the Director and is responsible for the archives, library, collections management, and all areas of collections supervised by the museum’s curators. As a federal museum, the Jewish Museum Berlin has the task of building up an extensive, national, high-quality collection on Jewish culture in Germany, thereby extending its reach beyond the borders of the Federal Republic of Germany. We are looking for a candidate with proven management qualities, excellent knowledge of collection and project management, and research experience in the specific field of museums.
– Direct the newly created organisational unit encompassing the archives and library, collection management including image archive, documentation, loan, restoration and collection holdings, and the curatorial collections of art, Judaica, applied art, photography, everyday culture and audio-visual media
– Develop the content and strategy of the Jewish Museum Berlin’s collection, including provenance research and digitisation of the collections
– Develop the structure, co-ordination and administration of the organisational unit
– Supervise the transformation of digital processes
– Ensure the scientific and conservational quality standards of the collection and work processes
– Establish and maintain national and international collaborations, as well as partnerships with other museums, scientific and cultural institutions
– Postgraduate degree in the humanities (MA / MSc / MLitt / MFA / state examination etc.)
– Knowledge of the history and culture of German Jews and of Jews in Germany
– Long-term management experience and proven leadership and social skills, preferably acquired in a museum
– Long-term professional experience in a collection-based museum and dealing with sensitive collections
– Experience in digitisation, networking and making collections available online
– Excellent knowledge of written and spoken German and English
– Existing national and international networks in relevant fields
– Proven ability to think and plan strategically; cooperative, inclusive and motivational leadership style with a strong focus on teamwork
– Strong organisational and communication skills; conceptually innovative approach with structured ways of thinking and working; confident and professional attitude
– Desirable: Experience in change management, diversity competence, comprehensive understanding of accessibility, and knowledge of Hebrew
