Contemporary Art Acquisitions

This exhibition presents contemporary artworks from the collection of the Jewish Historical Museum. In recent years, with the support of the BankGiro Lottery and many individual donors, the museum has been able to acquire a number of works of contemporary art. They are by Jewish and non-Jewish artists of various nationalities, all of whom live in the Netherlands. Their works display a variety of approaches and concerns: a fascination with the Hebrew language, connecting the world religions or a hidden family history. The Netherlands is home to many artists born in Israel. Their work is influenced both by their Israeli background and Dutch culture.

Most of the artists in this exhibition do not see themselves as ‘Jewish artists’. But that does not mean that religious ideas, Jewish history or their Jewish background do not occupy an important place in their work. Engaging with intimate yet universal themes such as migration, war, religion, love and identity, their works simultaneously elucidate specifi c Jewish issues and general human concerns.
