In collaboration with the Triton Foundation, the Jewish Historical Museum is pleased to present three prominent representatives of the School of London. Besides their artistic kinship and close personal friendships, these artists also shared Jewish backgrounds marked by persecution.
Frank Auerbach (1931) was born in Berlin and arrived in England in 1938 on one of the Children’s Transports to rescue Jewish refugee children. His parents were killed in Auschwitz.
The family of Lucian Freud (1922-2011) fled the city of his birth, Berlin, in 1933 and settled in London.
Leon Kossoff (1926) grew up in London as the son of Russian Jewish immigrants who fled the pogroms in Ukraine around 1906.
